Good morning,

Abraham believed God. “And he believed in the Lord; and he counted it to him for righteousness.” (Genesis 15:6)

This week we will look at the life of Abraham. We will look at Abraham’s call, God’s covenants, Abraham’s lack of faith and his faithfulness.

ABRAHAM’S LACK OF FAITH

God promised Abraham a child. Abraham and Sarah were unwilling to wait on God’s timing. What they did was acceptable in the culture of the day. However, God already told him He would supply their child. A natural born child.

Abram failed to believe God would keep His promise

Now Sarai Abram’s wife bare him no children: and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.² And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the Lord hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.³ And Sarai Abram’s wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife.⁴ And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived: and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.⁵ And Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have given my maid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the Lord judge between me and thee. (Genesis 16:1-5)

Ishmael   

And the angel of the Lord found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.⁸ And he said, Hagar, Sarai’s maid, whence camest thou? and whither wilt thou go? And she said, I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai.⁹ And the angel of the Lord said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands.¹⁰ And the angel of the Lord said unto her, I will multiply thy seed exceedingly, that it shall not be numbered for multitude.¹¹ And the angel of the Lord said unto her, Behold, thou art with child and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael; because the Lord hath heard thy affliction.¹² And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren. (Genesis 16:7-12)

Isaac

And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation.²¹ But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, which Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year. (Genesis 17: 20-21)

Conflict Arabs/Jews

And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, which she had born unto Abraham, mocking.¹⁰ Wherefore she said unto Abraham, Cast out this bondwoman and her son: for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac.¹¹ And the thing was very grievous in Abraham’s sight because of his son.¹² And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called. (Genesis 21:9-12)

Abraham failed to believe that God would provide for him a natural born son. He took matters into his own hands and we are living with the consequences of his lack of faith today.

Ishmael fathered the enemies of Israel. They are still fighting today.

When God makes a promise, He keeps His promises! When we fail to wait patiently for the fulfillment, we fail to obey, trust, and believe in God. That is sin.

We need to obey God’s word and wait patiently on Him.

God’s Covenants

Abraham’s acts of faith

As God supplies the ram as the substitute for Isaac, God sent Jesus to be the substitute for our sins. 

Why is this a foundational stone?

Abraham’s lack of faith instituted the strife between Arabs and what will be God’s people Israel

God provided a substitute sacrifice for Isaac and He did the same for us through the Lord Jesus Christ

God’s Covenants

Land

And the LORD appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the LORD, who appeared unto him. And he removed from thence unto a mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west, and Hai on the east: and there he builded an altar unto the LORD, and called upon the name of the LORD. (Genesis 12:7-8)

And the Lord said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward:¹⁵ For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever.¹⁶ And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered.¹⁷ Arise, walk through the land in the length of it and in the breadth of it; for I will give it unto thee. (Genesis 13:14-17)

In the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:¹⁹ The Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the  Kadmonites,²⁰ And the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaims,²¹ And the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites. (Genesis 15:18-21)

Isaac

And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him. (Genesis 17:19)

Father of many nations

And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the Lord appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.² And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly.³ And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying,⁴ As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations.⁵ Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.⁶ And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee.⁷ And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.⁸ And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God. (Genesis 17:1-8)

Blessing

And the angel of the Lord called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time,¹⁶ And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the Lord, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son: ¹⁷ That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;¹⁸ And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice. (Genesis 22:15-18)

When God makes a covenant, He keeps it. The covenant God made with Abraham is unbreakable. It is being fulfilled now and will be completely fulfilled in the future. God does not lie.

This covenant was not a conditional covenant. Only God made the covenant. There were no conditions set on Abraham’s part.

Contracts are our equivalent to a covenant. Two parties agree to do something. The contract is only as good as the parties making the contract. If one party chooses not to complete the contract, there are consequences.

Believers in Christ have a testimony to maintain. People should say that we are honest in all our dealings. When we agree to anything, we are obligated in the sight of God to perform that to which we agreed.

Do we? God is and will continue to keep covenant with His chosen people.

Abraham’s Call

God chose Abraham. He told him to leave his home, his family, and his father’s house and go to a land that God would show him. God did not specify the land, the reason, or the mission. He told Abraham to go. Abraham obeyed without questioning or argument.

God made promises, called covenants, to Abraham. God would make of him a great nation, He would bless him, He would make his name great, and that Abraham would be a blessing.

God also stated that He would bless those that bless Abraham and curse those that curse him.

Why did Abraham go? He believed God. This was the beginning of Abraham’s journey of faith.

“By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.⁹ By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:¹⁰ For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.” (Hebrews 11:8-10)

His eyes were on the eternal.

If God asked us to do something for Him, would we do it without questioning? What is our faith in God built? Are we heavenly minded or earthly? Spiritual of carnal? Do we care?

We should. Although we as believers in Christ are eternally saved, our works shall be tried by fire.

“Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is.¹⁴ If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.¹⁵ If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.¹⁶ Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?¹⁷ If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.” (1 Corinthians 3:13-17)

Our desire should be to be obedient to God’s word. To live by faith in Christ, who saved us from eternal damnation.

But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD. These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God. Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he. (Genesis 6:8, 9, 22)

GOD’S COVENANT WITH NOAH

And God spake unto Noah, and to his sons with him, saying, And I, behold, I establish my covenant with you, and with your seed after you; And with every living creature that is with you, of the fowl, of the cattle, and of every beast of the earth with you; from all that go out of the ark, to every beast of the earth. And I will establish my covenant with you, neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth. And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth. And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud: And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh. And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth. And God said unto Noah, This is the token of the covenant, which I have established between me and all flesh that is upon the earth. (Genesis 9:8-17)

WHY IS THIS A FOUNDATION STONE?

1) A righteous God must bring judgment on unrighteous mankind

2) Flood shaped our world: Environment, weather, earthquakes, volcanoes, etc

3) Ark was God’s show of mercy for one righteous man

4) We are all descendants from those 8 people

The rainbow is the covenant God made with Noah that He would never destroy the earth and all its inhabitants with a flood.

THE FLOOD

The Lord Commands Noah to Enter the Ark

  And the LORD said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation. Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee by sevens, the male and his female: and of beasts that are not clean by two, the male and his female. Of fowls also of the air by sevens, the male and the female; to keep seed alive upon the face of all the earth. For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth. And Noah did according unto all that the LORD commanded him. And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth. And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood. (Gen 7:1-7)

Length of the flood

And the flood was forty days upon the earth; and the waters increased, and bare up the ark, and it was lift up above the earth. And the waters prevailed, and were increased greatly upon the earth; and the ark went upon the face of the waters. And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high hills, that were under the whole heaven, were covered. Fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail; and the mountains were covered. And all flesh died that moved upon the earth, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of beast, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth, and every man: All in whose nostrils was the breath of life, of all that was in the dry land, died. And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth: and Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark. And the waters prevailed upon the earth an hundred and fifty days.  (Genesis 7:17-24)

Flood ends

And God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the cattle that was with him in the ark: and God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters assuaged; The fountains also of the deep and the windows of heaven were stopped, and the rain from heaven was restrained; And the waters returned from off the earth continually: and after the end of the hundred and fifty days the waters were bated.

Ark rests on Mountains of Ararat

And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat. And the waters decreased continually until the tenth month: in the tenth month, on the first day of the month, were the tops of the mountains seen. And it came to pass at the end of forty days, that Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made: And he sent forth a raven, which went forth to and fro, until the waters were dried up from off the earth. Also he sent forth a dove from him, to see if the waters were abated from off the face of the ground; But the dove found no rest for the sole of her foot, and she returned unto him into the ark, for the waters were on the face of the whole earth: then he put forth his hand, and took her, and pulled her in unto him into the ark. And he stayed yet other seven days; and again he sent forth the dove out of the ark; And the dove came in to him in the evening; and, lo, in her mouth was an olive leaf plucked off: so Noah knew that the waters were abated from off the earth. And he stayed yet other seven days; and sent forth the dove; which returned not again unto him any more. And it came to pass in the six hundredth and first year, in the first month, the first day of the month, the waters were dried up from off the earth: and Noah removed the covering of the ark, and looked, and, behold, the face of the ground was dry. And in the second month, on the seven and twentieth day of the month, was the earth dried. (Genesis 7:17-8:14)

The Lord commands Noah to enter the ark. Then He tells Noah that of the clean animals, seven male and female. The unclean animals, two male and female. The clean animals would be used for sacrifices.

Noah was 600 years old. Once his family was on board, with the animals and food, it was time for the flood to begin. Keep in mind, no one had ever seen rain before. So this was a first time event. It rained continually for forty days and forty nights. The waters prevailed on the earth for 150 days. The waters were so deep that they were twenty-two- and one-half feet above the highest mountain.

The rain stops and the ark ends up on the mountains of Ararat.  Forty days later, Noah sends out a raven and a dove. He does this three times till the dove comes back with an olive leaf. He waits another week and by the second month, on the twenty seventh day, the land was dry.

God took good care of Noah, his family, and all the animals aboard. No deaths or problems.

It took a lot of faith for Noah to build the ark, gather his family, and animals, enter into the ark, and be willing to bounce around for forty days and nights.

Are we willing to follow God’s call as Noah did? Will we go where God sends or say “No” to God? Have we committed ourselves to the basics of reading and obeying God’s word?

Noah did not wake up one morning and say I am going to build an ark for God. Being faithful is a process. The process begins with the basics and increasingly gets more complex.

The “END STATE” is pleasing God.

MAN’S SIN AND GOD’S JUDGEMENT

GOD’S HEART GRIEVED DETERMINES TO DESTROY MAN

And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them. And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die.  (Gen 6:5-7, 6:17)

GOD COMMANDS NOAH TO BUILD AN ARK

Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch. And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits. A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it. (Gen 6:14-16)

NOAH’S OBEDIENCE

Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he. (Gen 6:14-22)

GOD’S ARK OF MERCY

But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons’ wives with thee. And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female. Of fowls after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive. And take thou unto thee of all food that is eaten, and thou shalt gather it to thee; and it shall be for food for thee, and for them. (Gen 6:18-21)

THE FLOOD

The Lord Commands Noah to Enter the Ark

  And the LORD said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation. Flood ends

GOD’S COVENANT WITH NOAH

And God spake unto Noah, and to his sons with him, saying, And I, behold, I establish my covenant with you, and with your seed after you; And with every living creature that is with you, of the fowl, of the cattle, and of every beast of the earth with you; from all that go out of the ark, to every beast of the earth. And I will establish my covenant with you, neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth. And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth. And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud: And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh. And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth. And God said unto Noah, This is the token of the covenant, which I have established between me and all flesh that is upon the earth. (Genesis 9:8-17)

WHY IS THIS A FOUNDATION STONE?

1) A righteous God must bring judgment on unrighteous mankind

2) Flood shaped our world: Environment, weather, earthquakes, volcanoes, etc

3) Ark was God’s show of mercy for one righteous man

4) We are all descendants from those 8 people

This week our Old Testament Foundation Stone is the Flood. God shows His judgment and His mercy. He judged the men and women who chose to act wickedly and He showed mercy to a man who chose to do righteously.

But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD. These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God. Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he. (Genesis 6:8, 9, 22)

MAN’S SIN AND GOD’S JUDGEMENT

GOD’S HEART GRIEVED DETERMINES TO DESTROY MAN

And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them. And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die.  (Gen 6:5-7, 6:17)

GOD COMMANDS NOAH TO BUILD AN ARK

Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch. And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits. A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it. (Gen 6:14-16)

NOAH’S OBEDIENCE

Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he. (Gen 6:14-22)

GOD’S ARK OF MERCY

But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons’ wives with thee. And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female. Of fowls after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive. And take thou unto thee of all food that is eaten, and thou shalt gather it to thee; and it shall be for food for thee, and for them. (Gen 6:18-21)

We determined last week that man sins. We learned that man’s sin requires judgment.

This week we see God applying His judgment on His creation because they chose to act wickedly and do evil. How would you feel if you poured your life into someone and then they turned their back on you? This is what happened with God. This was His creation. It was a perfect creation prior to sin being entered into the world. God’s standard is to live righteously.

Noah chose to do righteously in the midst of all this wickedness. Can you imagine the ridicule he took while building the ark? Yet he obeyed and followed God’s precise instructions.

God extended mercy to Noah and his family for their obedience. Only eight people were saved. We are their descendants.

The challenge for us is to live lives pleasing to God. That means reading and obeying His word, the Bible. Reading it everyday and doing what it says to do, will put us on the road to living a righteous life.

This week’s foundation stone is sin. What is sin? Who is Satan? What did God command Adam not to do? Did Adam have a choice? What was the results of Adam’s decision? What is the consequence of sin? Can we be restored?

These questions will be answered this week.

Today we will look at the result of how to deal with the temptations of Satan and we will learn why sin is a foundation stone.

SATAN ONLY HAS THE POWER YOU GIVE HIM

1 CORINTHIANS 10:13

There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

JAMES 4:7

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

COLOSSIANS 2:10-15

And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

WHEN did this event occur?

1) When did Satan fall?

2) Day one?

3) How long were Adam and Eve in the garden prior to the fall?

WHERE did happen? 

The Garden of Eden.

WHY is this a foundation stone?

1) This one event effected man for all time.

Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: (Romans 5:12)

2) Since this time, we have been in a spiritual war with the forces of evil.

Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. (Ephesians 6:10-12)

3) It caused God to put into play His plan for Jesus Christ to be the blood sacrifice to cover all our sins.

For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: (1 Cor 15:3-4)

Result of Adam’s decision  v7-10

Realized he was naked and afraid of God

“And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.⁸ And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden. ⁹ And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? ¹⁰ And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.”

God’s response to Adam’s decision    v11-24

Recognizes Adam’s disobedience v11-12

“And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? ¹² And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.”

God’s response to the serpent (Satan) v13-15

“And the Lord God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat. ¹⁴ And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: ¹⁵ And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.”

God’s response to the woman (Eve) v16

“Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.”

God’s response to the man (Adam) v17-19

“And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; ¹⁸ Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;¹⁹ In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.”

Removal from the garden v22-24

“And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever: Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubim, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.”

CONSEQUENCES FOR DISOBEDIENCE IS SEPARATION FROM GOD

“If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me:” (Psalm 66:18)

There are consequences when we sin. Adam and Eve paid a steep price for disobeying God. They lost their innocence, their home, their sustenance, their fellowship with God, and that sin would follow each generation.

The animal kingdom was also affected. They became predators.  They went from being docile and loving, to ferocious and angry. It has become survival of the fittest.

When we sin there are also consequences. We lose our fellowship with God. God then must judge us as He did Adam and Eve. If we fail to repent, the judgment becomes harsher. It is God’s way of getting our attention.

Keep short accounts with God. We will sin! What God wants us to do is repent immediately. Get right with God and so that we can enjoy the blessings and privileges that come along with being a believer in Christ.

Tomorrow we will learn how to deal with the temptations of the devil and learn why sin is a foundation stone.
