Good Evening, Seniors!

I wanted to let you know that there have been significant recent changes that impact the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Medicaid recipient benefits. Previously, State of Alaska (SOA) considered the incomes of all inhabitants within a residence. As seniors often live with family or others, this may have rendered them ineligible for SNAP. Now, individuals 60 and older who experience a disability are considered separately in eligibility decisions.

In addition, the federal public heath emergency declaration (due to the Covid-19 pandemic) is expected to end in April. During the declaration, Medicaid terminations have, largely, been suspended, even in cases when individuals' financial resources have increased. Medicaid eligibility redetermination is expected to resume in April.
If your income has increased beyond the Medicaid limits during the past 2 years, you may be at risk of losing your benefits.
Finally, Medicaid restricts use of medical services in certain cases; this is known as Care Management Please be advised that it is your right to receive proper notice explaining why you are being placed on Care Management before this occurs. If you are not provided fair notice, you may be able to challenge the placement at a fair hearing.
